The movie story is about a 14 year old boy Ellis (Tye Sheridan) on a makeshift houseboat on the banks of a river in Arkansas with his parents. Mary Lee (Sarah Paulson) and Senior (Ray McKinnon).Ellis have grown up with one of his friend Neckbone (Jacob LOfland) who stay with his uncle. Both of them set off on an adventure down river to find an old boat, surrealistically stranded high in a tree on a deserted island. They come across a handsome, charismatic man called Mud (Matthew McConaughey), and he too lays claim to the boat. Mud is a gritty, superstitious character; his clothes are dirty, his tooth is broken, and he needs help. Ellis acts out of an innate sense of decency, sympathy and a need for friendship. Neckbone’s motives are initially cynical and mercenary, though he gradually warms to the outsider.
